First impressions

Wow - I'm here. I arrived in Hong Kong at 4 pm on Wednesday (3 am EST) November 8 after a flight over the North Pole and then south across Siberia (and four not very good movies). The Hong Kong airport was much better designed and staffed than the typical US airport. There was only one path from the gate to customs and baggage claim, but everywhere friendly people gestured the way. I easily exchanged money and found the hotel shuttle.

Hotel arrivals must be much the same everywhere, but here Sikh men greet guests at the door and assist with bags. The view from the hotel room is a sea of rooftops and apartment balconies, then a wall of skyscrapers, then emerald green hills - my first real view of Hong Kong. I got to the hotel around 6 and then to the Hong Kong Adventist hospital around 7 pm. Robb was sleeping. His right eye is very red and swollen. The hospital seems good, with very attentive and friendly staff. Robb was happy to see me when he woke, but very groggy and pitiful.

Back at the hotel, I took a walk. Hong Kong streets are a jumble of neon lights and crowds, apparently forever shopping. This is the World Trade Center shopping mall at about 10 PM, around the corner from our hotel.

I am glad that I came. Thanks so much to Marica, Becky, Camille and all of you who are helping with our conference sessions.
